MCC captures second national golf championship
CHAUTAUQUA, NY - The Monroe Community College golf team completed a perfect season Friday, firing a final round 298 to capture the 2009 NJCAA Division III national championship at Chautauqua Golf Club.
MCC finished with a total team score of 1,173. Rochester Community and Technical College and Burlington County College were next with 1,203's, with RCTC winning the tiebreaker to finish second.
Chris Malec (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) earned medalist honors for the tournament and finished as the individual national champion. The freshman shot a final-round 72 and finished 7-under for the tournament.
The wire-to-wire victory was a fitting way to end the season for MCC, as the Tribunes were victorious in every meet they entered this year.
Tyler Phillips (Williamson, NY/Williamson) carded a 74 on Friday, while Taylor Page (Holley, NY/Holley) was right behind with a 75. Jordan Wilson (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) shot a 77 and Ben Finn (Gananda, NY/Gananda) shot an 81.
It was the second national title for the Tribunes, who won the 2006 championship with a total score of 1,168.
