Tribunes lengthen Region III lead
ROCHESTER - It took three attempts, but the MCC ice hockey team finally solved the Mohawk Valley Hawks.
Tom Pappa (Oswego, NY/Oswego) had two goals and Danny Kuntz (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) stopped 25 shots as the Tribunes topped Mohawk Valley 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
The win avenged two earlier losses to the Hawks this season, the only losses Monroe has suffered. The Tribunes are in first place in Region III.
Pappa scored the first two goals of the game.
During a 4-on-4 late in the first period, Pappa took a pass from Matt Rutledge (Saranac Lake, NY/Saranac Lake), swooped up the right side of the ice, and beat the Mohawk goalie for a 1-0 lead.
The sophomore then added his second score 1:58 into the second
period, back-handing a rebound into the net.
The Hawks cut the lead in half as Mike Mason scored with 4:26 left in the second period
MCC put the game away late in the third. Matt McNeil (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) scored with 5:29 left, and Taylor Hill (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) added the final dagger with 2:14 remaining.
David Russell (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) added two assists on the day. Andy Orsini (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) and Jeff Osler (Brockville, Ont./St. Mary's) also had helpers.
The Tribunes are 12-2-1 on the season and 12-2 in Region III.
