MCC hockey wins regional title

Easton's overtime goal wins it for the Tribunes

TROY, NY - The Monroe Community College ice hockey program has experienced plenty of firsts in its eight years of existence.  The Tribunes can now cross another item off the list.

MCC won the first regional title in the program's history Sunday afternoon, defeating North Country CC 3-2 in overtime.

Freshman Kyle Easton (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored the unassisted game-winner 12:51 into the first overtime period to give Monroe (20-4-2) the title.

MCC trailed North Country 2-0 after two periods but staged a comeback to force the extra session.  Al Liwush (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) cut the lead in half just 18 seconds into the third period.

The scored remained 2-1 until the 6:51 mark, when Paul Helfer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tied the game off assists from Eric McJury (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Brendan Prince (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena).

MCC goalie Jake Burge (Hilton, NY/Hilton) helped keep the game deadlocked through the end of regulation and the first few minutes of the overtime period.  That's when Easton came up with the puck and scored to clinch the victory.

Easton and Burge were named co-MVP's of the tournament.

MCC will now travel to Bottineau, N.D. March 2-4 for the national championships.  It will be a best-of-three series with Minot State University-Bottineau.  MSU defeated MCC 6-1 during the regular season.
