MCC advances at nationals
ROCHESTER, MN - The MCC softball team continued on in the winner's bracket, defeating College of DuPage 5-4 in the second round of the NJCAA Division III national tournament.
MCC will play at 5 p.m. (EDT) Friday against either Brookdale CC or Tompkins Cortland CC.
The Tribunes (38-9) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Tied at four, Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) doubled high off the wall in left-center and later came home on a wild pitch.
Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY/Williamson) got the win on the mound, scattering eight hits over six innings while allowing four runs (one earned). Lindsey Grace (Honeoye, NY/Honeoye) tossed a perfect seventh for the save.
Monroe got on the board in the first on a sacrifice fly by Gabrielle Elsbree (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names). The Tribunes added one in the second on a single by Hannah Myers (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo).
Elsbree came through with a two-run single in the bottom of the third to put MCC up 4-1. DuPage came back with three unearned runs in the sixth to tie the game.
Stephanie Wagar (Greece, NY/Greece Arcadia) finished 2-for-3 with two runs and Elsbree had a hit and three RBIs.
