Second-half surge lifts Monroe
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's basketball team overcame a slow start and went on to defeat CCAC-Allegheny 85-75 in Monroe's opener Saturday night.
The Tribunes trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and were down 42-35 at the intermission. MCC then took over, outscoring the Cougars 50-33 over the final 20 minutes to put the game away.
Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East High) scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half to lead Monroe. Raheem Singleton (Boston, MA/Laurinburg Prep) finished with a game-high 23 points - including 12-of-16 from the free throw line - and also dished out five assists.
The Tribunes trailed 48-39 with 17 minutes left before going on a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the game. Allegheny kept it close for a few minutes, but MCC hit 8-of-11 free throws down the stretch to ice it.
Jashon Mixon (Newark, NJ/Alif Muhammed) added 11 points for Monroe. Aaron Williams (Boston, MA/East Boston) and Shyrone Carter (Newark, NJ/Alif Muhammed) added nine apiece.
