MCC suffers first loss of season

ROCHESTER - The sixth-ranked Erie CC Kats built a 17-point lead in the second half and held on to defeat previously unbeaten and No. 1 Monroe CC 100-99 on Monagan Court Saturday.

With the loss the Tribunes fell to 14-1 on the season and 1-1 in WNYAC play.  Erie is 15-1 on the year.

MCC led 51-47 at the break, but the Kats came out strong in the second half and eventually built their own lead to 87-70 with 7:10 remaining.  That's when Monroe turned it around.

The Tribunes proceeded to go on a 23-5 run over the next 4:03, sparked by Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) and Shyrone Carter (Newark, NJ/Weequahic).  Bell hit all four of his 3's and Carter added two of his eight during the spurt to help bring MCC back.

When Bell hit two free throws with 3:07 left, MCC led 93-92.

The teams exchanged leads over the last three minutes.  Monroe led 99-98 when Erie's Eion Lewis hit a layup with 17 seconds left.  The Tribunes had a couple chances at the end but couldn't get the basket they needed.

Carter finished 8-of-11 from downtown and scored a career-high 35 points for MCC.  The eight 3's were one off the MCC single-game record set by Donnell Cummings in 1992.

Raheem Singleton (Boston, MA/Madison Park) had 17 points, 11 assists, and five steals, while Bell had all 14 of his points in the second half.

Jashon Mixon (Newark, NJ/Weequahic) had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Aaron Williams (Boston, MA/East Boston) added 10 points and five assists.

Erie outrebounded MCC 48-28.  The Kats also shot 58 percent on the game.
