MCC overwhelms Finger Lakes
ROCHESTER - A balanced attack and relentless pressure helped the MCC men's basketball team defeat Finger Lakes CC 74-43 in the first round of the 19th annual Pete Pavia Memorial Scholarship Tournament Friday.
The Tribunes (7-4) will face Lakeland CC at 8 p.m. Saturday in the championship. Finger Lakes will play Oakland CC at 6 p.m. in the consolation.
Monroe jumped out to a 24-point lead at the half, thanks to a pressure defense that forced the Lakers into a number of turnovers. MCC forced 24 FLCC miscues on the game.
Andre Armstrong (Queens, NY/Notre Dame Prep) hit three of his four 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes and finished with 13 points on the night. Eddie Callender (Philadelphia, PA/Lankenau) also scored 13 and added eight rebounds.
The MCC bench outscored its Finger Lakes counterparts 51-2 on the game.
Francis Obumneme (Nigeria/Konigin Des Frendes) had 10 points and eight boards for the Tribunes. Kenny Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends) chipped in with five points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, PA/Rise Prep) and Arnold Fripp (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Collegiate) passed out six assists apiece.
