MCC finishes sixth at nationals
DANVILLE, IL - Cecil College closed on an 11-3 run and defeated MCC 74-67 at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Tribunes (30-7) finished in sixth place at the tournament. Cecil ended up in fifth.
MCC led 64-63 after a jumper by Kareem Brown (New London, CT/New London). But the Hawks responded with a quick basket and a 3-pointer to take a 68-64 lead with two minutes remaining.
After a pair of free throws by Jeron Belin (Meriden, CT/Maloney) cut the lead back to two, Cecil got an open layup and added two more foul shots with 36 seconds left to help ice the game.
The Tribunes trailed 47-40 early in the second half before mounting a comeback. Brown had a 3-pointer and a three-point play to help fuel a 12-0 run that put MCC up 52-47. Monroe’s biggest lead was at the 8:15 mark, as Mark Lake Jr. (Harlem, NY/All Hallows) hit a layup to make it 59-52.
The Hawks marched right back however, retaking the lead for good with 2:42 left.
Brown finished with a game-high 20 for MCC. Raheem Singleton (Boston, MA/Laurinburg Prep) scored 13, and Antonio Williams (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie) played well off the bench with 13 points and five rebounds.
Lake finished with 10 points. The Tribunes were just 6-for-28 from behind the arc and 17-for-29 at the charity stripe.
