MCC advances to regional finals
ROCHESTER - For the 21st consecutive year, the Monroe Community College men's soccer team will play for the Region III championship.
Gerry Martello (Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge) had a goal and an assist and Anthony Pipitone (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) earned the shutout as the Tribunes topped Mercyhurst North East 3-0 in the regional semifinals Wednesday afternoon.
MCC (7-7-1) will travel to Syracuse to take on Bryant & Stratton at 1 p.m. Saturday for the championship.
Martello opened the scoring for Monroe in the 30th minute. Mike Collis (Brooklyn, NY/Paul Robeson) put a shot on goal and the keeper deflected it wide. Martello was there to one-time the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
MCC went up 2-0 in the 43rd minute off another rebound, as Jeremy Loncao (Brighton, NY/Brighton) controlled a goalie deflection and put it in for the score.
Martello then assisted a goal by Jeff Durosier (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Ramapo) in the second half to finish the scoring.
