MCC wins regional title on PK's
SYRACUSE -
There were times during the regular season when things didn't go exactly as planned for coach Nelson Cupello and the MCC men's soccer team.
During one stretch the Tribunes lost five straight games, dimming the team's hopes for a long playoff run.
But Cupello's charges turned it on at the right time. MCC won its 15th Region III championship Saturday, defeating host Bryant & Stratton on penalty kicks.
MCC's goal came from high-scoring forward Moses Watkis (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/South Kent) in the 24th minute. The Bobcats countered with a score late in the second half. The game remained tied at one through regulation and overtime.
The Tribunes then outscored the Bobcats 5-3 in the penalty kicks to get the win. MCC converted its first three goals and Stratton its first two before the third Bobcat try went over the crossbar. After exchanging scores, Monroe put it away with the deciding fifth PK.
Tony Pipitone (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) made six saves for the Tribunes, many in spectacular fashion. He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Cupello was named the Region III, Division I Coach of the Year.
