Mesa holds off Monroe
MESA, AZ- Mesa Community College scored three goals in the first half and held on for a 3-2 victory over Monroe CC in men's soccer action Monday.
The Tribunes finish 1-1 on their season-opening trip out west. Monroe defeated GateWay CC 2-1 Friday.
The Thunderbirds broke through early on a goal in the 11th minute and later made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Monroe got on the board just two minutes later, as freshman Elhadj Barry (Henrietta, NY/Greece Olympia) scored. However, Mesa regained the two-goal lead with a score late in the half.
The score remained 3-1 into the waning moments of the second half before Monroe's Julio Olivares (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) found the back of the net to cut the lead back to one. That's as close as MCC got as Mesa prevailed.
Seamus Sharkey (Newtown, Ireland/St. Eunans) and Adriano Negri (Vancouver, BC/Templeton) added assists for the Tribunes.
MCC will play their home opener this Sunday against CCBC-Catonsville at 12 p.m.
