Pavia tournament set for this weekend

ROCHESTER - The 19th annual Pete Pavia Memorial Scholarship Basketball Tournament will take place on Monagan Court at MCC this weekend.

A full slate of men’s and women’s games will tip off Friday evening and run through Sunday afternoon.  Participating colleges include MCC, Lakeland CC Finger Lakes CC, and Oakland CC.  Follow the link for the tournament schedule.

The Pete Pavia Scholarship Fund is dedicated to the memory of the late Pete Pavia, a longtime Division I basketball official from Rochester.  Mr. Pavia was very active in charity efforts for Camp Good Days and Special Times.  He demonstrated courage, caring, and compassion for others until he lost his battle with cancer in 1992 at the age of 54.

Pete Pavia’s tradition of courage and excellence is exemplified at MCC.  Each year, two $3,000 scholarships are awarded in his honor to a deserving male and female from their respective teams at Monroe Community College. To qualify, a student-athlete must demonstrate economic need as well as the qualities of sportsmanship, concern for the community, and a desire to achieve excellence in education.

Chris McVicker, president of the Flanders group, has been instrumental in the development of the Pete Pavia Scholarship Fund.  Other major contributors include Dr. Sam Rizzo, Ken Vasile, MCC Vice President for Student Services, Dr. Susan Salvador, and former Monroe athletic director, Murph Shapiro.
