Six named Academic All-American

ROCHESTER - Six Monroe Community College student-athletes were honored for their work in the classroom as the NJCAA released the 2008-2009 Academic All-American award winners.

Three of those student-athletes, women's lacrosse player Kristine Olijnyk (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), swimmer Caleb Ludlow (Geneseo, NY/Homeschooled), and volleyball player Cara Calcagno (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) were named Distinguished Academic All-Americans for having a GPA higher than 3.80.

The other award winners were swimmer Bethany Peris (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), hockey player Matt Sauer (Walworth, NY/McQuaid), and golfer Nick Lomenzo (Victor, NY/Victor), all having GPA's between 3.60 and 3.79.

Olijnyk, who was also a SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete winner, carried a 3.97 grade point average in the classroom.  The two-time lacrosse All-American also graduated as MCC's all-time leading scorer in goals and points.

Ludlow, who had a 3.89 GPA, was the regional champion in the 100-yard butterfly.  He also helped the MCC men to regional titles in four different relays.

Calcagno finished sixth in the nation with an average of 8.9 assists per game.  She was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District volleyball second team and had a 3.82 grade point average.

Peris, who carried a 3.74 GPA, was an All-American in the pool for the Tribunes.  She was regional champ in the 500 and 1650 freestyles and placed fourth in the 1650 at nationals.

Sauer captained the hockey team to a birth in the NJCAA national semifinals.  He finished the season with 10 goals and 15 assists and had a 3.72 GPA.

Lomenzo was a member of the 2009 NJCAA national champion MCC golf team.  He carried an 83.50 stroke average for 18 holes, including a season-best 77 at Chautauqua Golf Club.  He had a 3.72 GPA.
