MCC men, women remain Region/District champs
ROCHESTER - It was quite a sight watching the entire MCC men's and women's swimming and diving teams jump into the pool at once. It's a collective leap the Tribunes have turned into a yearly occurrence.
The spirited plunge into the water signified two more Region III/Northeast District championships for Monroe. That makes it nine straight for the men and four for the women.
The MCC men finished with 427 points, beating out Alfred State which finished second with 387. Monroe's Daniel Branca (Panama) was named the Outstanding Male Swimmer of the Meet as he finished the weekend with victories in the 500 free, 200 free, and 200 butterfly, setting Region III records in the first two.
Branca also helped lead the 200 free, 800 free, and 400 free relay teams to first place finishes.
On the women's side, a balanced and relentless attack resulted in 578 points for Monroe, the most ever scored in the meet. Genesee CC had a strong weekend and finished in second place with 331 points.
Nathan Butler (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) got things started on Sunday for Monroe with a victory in the men's 200 backstroke (2:02.90). Courtney Gruschow (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) followed with a first-place finish in the 100 free (57.83).
Aram Salehi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was then victorious in one the meet's most exciting races, defeating Alfred State's Dan Langworthy by fifteen-hundredths of a second in the men's 100 free.
Jackie Rode (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Branca then earned Monroe back-to-back wins in the 200 butterfly. Rode won in 2:41.84, while Branca was victorious in 1:56.99.
The Tribune men's and women's 400 free relay teams each took first place to close out the meet.
Earlier in the day Caitlin McNamara (Brighton, NY/Brighton) won the 1,650 free in 20:10.59 for MCC.
The Tribunes will now travel to Indian River, FL for the NJCAA national championship meet March 5-8.
