MCC advances to regional finals
ROCHESTER - Mike Tomeno (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had the go-ahead hit in the eighth and MCC scored six more in the top of the ninth as the Tribunes defeated Genesee CC 12-5 in the second round of the Region III, Division II tournament.
Genesee later defeated Mercyhurst North East 11-3. MCC and GCC will meet in the championship Sunday at 12 p.m. Genesee has to defeat Monroe twice to claim the title, while the Tribunes just have to win once.
Trailing 5-4 entering the top of the eighth, MCC (23-16) tied the game) on a solo home run by Olivier Bertrand (Sainte-Adele, QUE/Polyvalente-des-Monts). Ronnie Stout (Medina, OH/Medina) and Jordy Smola (Greece, NY/Greece Odyssey) followed with singles before Tomeno doubled to put MCC up 6-5.
The floodgates opened in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a long two-run home run by Taylor Harrington (Rumford, RI/Pendleton) and a two-run single from Tomeno.
Pat Corrigan (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) got the win in relief, striking out two over three innings. Jason Gardner (Rochester, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) went the first six, allowing three unearned runs and striking out two.
Tomeno finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Tribunes. Bertrand and Joe Polichetti (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) each added two hits and two runs driven in. Justin Urschel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had three runs scored and a stolen base.
