Pioneers hold off Monroe
ROCHESTER - Alfred State held off a late MCC rally and held on to defeat the Tribunes in five games in a Western New York Athletic Conference volleyball battle Tuesday night.
The Pioneers prevailed by scores of 25-21, 17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-12. MCC is 4-5 on the season.
After spotting ASC the first set, Monroe rallied to take the next two. The Tribunes were down 9-3 in the third game before rallying behind the serving of Lisa Stefanik (Greece, NY/Greece Arcadia) and Tamara Robertson (Victor, NY/Victor) and key net play from Sarah Kuperus (Newark, NY/Newark).
Alfred came back to win game four to force the deciding fifth. The Pioneers were up 14-8 before MCC countered with four straight to cut the lead to two. But Alfred was able to finish it off for the win.
Kuperus finished with 12 kills and four blocks for Monroe. Sarah Zelko (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added 14 assists and eight kills.
Stefanik tallied eight assists, six digs, and three aces and Katie Lasch (Greece, NY/Greece Arcadia) added three kills and two blocks.
