Defense keys Monroe to victory
ROCHESTER - Charmonique Watt (Brooklyn, NY/Lincoln) scored a game-high 23 points and the MCC defense held Mercyhurst North East to 30 percent shooting en route to an 81-43 victory Saturday.
The win evened the Lady Tribunes record at 6-6 on the year. MCC is 2-0 in Western New York Athletic Conference play.
Watt had 13 of her 23 in the first half as Monroe opened a 33-14 lead. The Tribunes held the Saints to 24 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Kim Brown (Hayward, CA/Hayward) had career-highs with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Tribunes. Kamiel Brown (Jamaica, NY/South Shore) added 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.
MCC finished the game with 18 steals and forced 32 turnovers. The Tribunes had 30 points off those turnovers.
Natalie Young (Queens, NY/John Adams) scored 11 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. Natasha Smalls (Harlem, NY/St. Michael's Academy) had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Perrial Pearson led Mercyhurst with 22 points.
