Orsini's OT goal lifts MCC to title game
CANTON, NY - Andy Orsini (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) scored 3:22 into overtime to give top-seeded MCC an exciting 3-2 victory over SUNY Canton in the semifinals of the 2008 NJCAA national hockey tournament.
MCC is 19-4-2 on the season. The Tribunes will face either Minot State University-Bottineau or North Country CC in the national championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The game-winning sequence started when Matt Sauer (Walworth, NY/McQuaid) chipped the puck out of the zone to Tom Pappa (Oswego, NY/Oswego). Pappa blew past a Canton defenseman and froze another defenseman and the goalie with a perfect pass to Orsini. The sophomore forward slammed the puck into the open net for the winner.
The Tribunes trailed 2-1 late in the third period before Allan Campisi (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) tied it with 2:46 left to force overtime. Campisi also scored Monroe's first goal on a deflection in the first period.
The Kangaroos (16-10-2) had two straight goals, one in the second period and another in the third, to take a 2-1 lead.
Danny Kuntz (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) made 30 saves in goal for the Tribunes. The MCC special teams came up big all game, with both of Campisi's goals coming on the power play and the defense killing 14 of 15 penalties.
Pappa finished with two assists on the game. Orsini also had a helper. Clint Campbell (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid) and Kyle Easton (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) assisted on Campisi's first goal.
