MCC wins 11th straight regional title

ROCHESTER - The Monroe Community College women's soccer team won its 11th straight Region III title and 22nd overall, defeating Bryant & Stratton 4-1 on John L. DiMarco Field Sunday.

Tournament MVP Anne Beinetti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Homeschooled) had two goals to spark the Tribunes, who improved to 14-1 on the season.

MCC will host the district tournament next weekend as the team looks for yet another trip to the NJCAA Division I national tournament.

The first half was scoreless before the Tribunes broke through with just 36 seconds left before the break. Ashley Wilson (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) fired a shot that was deflected away by the goalie.  Beinetti was there to knock home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats countered in the 47th minute with a goal of their own to tie the game at one.  It stayed that way until the 62nd minute, when Veronica Santiago (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) took a pass from Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) and scored to make it 2-1.

Stratton threatened a few times down the stretch, but goalie Rachel Popowych (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) and the defense of Jessica Gagliano (Gates, NY/Gates Chili), Allyn Parrino (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Joanna Prestigiacomo (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) kept them off the board.

MCC put the game away in the 90th minute with a pair of goals.  Beinetti scored her second off a pass from Wilson with 23 seconds left.  Wilson then added a goal of her own with one second left to provide the final outcome.

Popowych finished with eight saves for the Tribunes.  Head coach Sal Galvano was named the Region III, Division I Coach of the Year.
