Pima tops Monroe in NJCAA first round
ALBANY, GA - Pima Community College scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the second half to defeat Monroe Community College 2-1 in the first round of the NJCAA Division I women's soccer national tournament.
MCC will face Navarro College at 12 p.m. Friday. Pima advances to face CCBC-Catonsville in the semifinals.
PCC got on the board in the 26th minute, converting a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until Monroe tied the game with 4:43 left before intermission.
Brianna Diaz (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) worked the ball up the right side of the field and sent a pass to Aveann Douglas (Arma, Trinidad/St. George's) in front of the net. Douglas held off a defender and tapped the ball back to Victoria Begy (Livonia, NY/Livonia), who ripped a shot into the upper left side to tie the game.
PCC got the game-winner in the 50th minute, as a long, wind-aided shot got over a leaping Kimika Forbes (Plymouth, Tobago/Scarborough) to make it 2-1.
Forbes finished with 10 saves for Monroe, who falls to 14-3 on the season.
