Lady Tribunes win first two

ROCHESTER - Veronica Santiago (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) was named Offensive MVP as the MCC women's soccer team picked up two victories at the NJCAA Northeast Cup hosted by Tompkins Cortland CC this weekend.

The Tribunes (2-0) defeated TC3 5-0 on Saturday and followed that up with a 2-0 victory over defending Division III national champ Broome CC Sunday.

Monroe overcame an hour rain delay on Saturday to come up with the win in the season opener.  Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) had two goals and Santiago added a goal and an assist.

Sarah Petrie (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Bailey Maxwell (St. Thomas, ON/St. Joseph's) also found the back of the net.

Rachel Popowych (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Kylee Jones (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) combined for the shutout.

Santiago broke a scoreless tie early in the second half in the win over Broome.  Joanna Prestigiacomo (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) added a goal and an assist. The Hornets did not register a shot on the MCC goal.

The Tribunes will be home this weekend for the MCC Invitational.  Monroe will take on Cincinnati State at 4 p.m. Friday and Mercer CCC at 11 a.m. Sunday.  Cincinnati and Mercer will play at 3 p.m. Saturday.
