Semrau's late goal lifts Monroe
ROCHESTER - Chelsey Semrau (Greece, NY/Greece Arcadia) headed in the game-winning goal with 2:19 remaining in regulation to give the MCC women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Mercer CCC Sunday afternoon.
Semrau's goal, off a free kick from Veronica Santiago (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), came 4:16 after Mercer had tied the game at one after a scramble in front of the Tribune goal.
Monroe improved to 4-0 with the victory. The Lady Tribunes will be on the road for three games before returning home Sept. 23.
MCC got on the board in the ninth minute. Anne Beinetti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Homeschool) slammed a shot off the left post and it trickled across the crease and into the right side of the net. Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) assisted on the play.
The score remained 1-0 until Mercer came through with 6:35 left in the second half. That set up the free kick and Semrau's winner.
Rachel Popowych (Hamlin, NY/Brockport) made two saves in goal for Monroe.
