OUR MISSION
The Monroe Community College Cheer/Dance Program is committed to developing well-rounded student-athletes who are dedicated to supporting the athletic teams at MCC. We strive to represent our community in an honorable manner that is indicative of the Tribune tradition upon which the college was founded.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Monroe Community College Cheer/Dance program is a student activity as well as a sport. As such, its first and foremost responsibility to the student is to support and not compromise the student’s academic career. Secondly, the program should aid in developing the student into a responsible, mature and independent adult. The cheerleader’s primary purpose on the team is to raise the level of fan support for the athletic program and to lead by example. There are many lessons that can be learned from a student-athlete’s involvement in cheerleading. Through the team’s daily regimen, members are taught about the importance of teamwork, commitment, focus, positive reinforcement, and respect. OVERVIEW
The Lady Tribunes Cheer/Dance team will consist of up to 20 members. They will be an exciting addition to men’s and women’s home basketball games. This team of student-athletes will show its support for Monroe athletic teams with energetic and entertaining performances and will also make community appearances.
ACADEMICS
The members of the team are exposed to one of the premier academic and athletic community college programs in the nation. MCC is known for its strong academic advisement program. Our goal is to provide a structured cheerleading environment where students can participate in athletics as well as achieve academically.
COMMITMENT
Candidates for a position on the Cheer/Dance team should closely examine their priorities, their class and work schedules, and their academic abilities before trying out. Our goal is to have those chosen be successful in fulfilling their duties on the team while maintaining a full class load, a part-time job, and personal commitments. Each team member must have the heart and dedication for Cheer/Dance AND Academics.
TRYOUTS
2008-2009 tryouts will be held Oct. 13 and 15 from 7:30-10 p.m. in the MCC gymnasium.
Candidates will be taught a short cheer and dance. Cuts may be made throughout tryouts depending on the candidate’s abilities and progress. Candidates need to wear a tank top, shorts, and cheer sneakers. The shirts and shorts should not have any school or gym name on them. Hair must be pulled back away from the face. Jewelry of any kind is not permitted and all piercings must be removed, including belly and tongue. Nails must be short. Tryouts are closed to the public.
PRACTICE TIMES
Practices will be held twice weekly in the late afternoon. Because of the limited practice time, it is expected that members attend all practices with few exceptions. It is also expected that team members are on time and stay the entire time. Practice schedules may change depending on the availability of the gymnasium and the need of the team.
