2009 Season Outlook

This year, MCC intends to reestablish itself as a contender at the National Championship.  We had some disappointing Regional play the last two years. Team captain Derek Doyle, Nick Lomenzo and Jordan Wilson have expressed the importance of postseason play to the freshmen.  They are motivating the rest of the team to return MCC Golf back to a position of national contention.

This year’s first-year players are:  Ben Finn, Jeff Gasbarre, Chris Malec, Taylor Page and Tyler Phillips.  This group of players was led in fall by Chris Malec.  This team shot the lowest team scores in the Fall scrimmages of any MCC team under Coach Graham.  They are very deep and under par scores can come from most players on the team.  This team will be competing hard amongst themselves just to get a chance to compete in tournaments.  It is this team competition that should put us back at the National Championship once again.

Teams are defined and redefined every year, especially in Junior College athletics.  This year’s sophomores will have to show the freshmen what it takes to succeed.  Success means playing your best golf at the right time.

Our goals include a scoring average of 300 or less and a national ranking inside the top five.  We are also shooting for a Region III title and to be in the last wave on the final day at the National Championship with a chance to win.  To achieve these goals, we will again focus most of our time on and around the green.  We will expand our focus this year to how we approach the green and how good pars really are.  Learning how and when to attack or defend is critical to shooting low scores.
