2009 Season

This year's Monroe Community College volleyball team has a roster of 12 strong players.  The group worked extremely hard during preseason and has really seemed to gel together as a team.  With only three returning players, most of the girls have never played together.  Returning from last year's team are Sarah Kuperus, Katie Lasch, and Randi Barczykowski.  Katie will be playing on the right side for Monroe this season.  She has tremendous blocking skills and has improved her already solid hitting.  Katie has also emerged as the team leader.  Sarah came into preseason playing even better then she finished last year.  She will be playing middle again this season.  Sarah is a smart player and is quick off her feet.  Her hard work has allowed her to become one of the strongest middles in Region III.  Randi returned this year with her usual strong work ethic.  She continues to gain strength after having knee surgery in late spring.  Randi offers strong support for the team and will see court time in the outside position.

Starting her campaign at Monroe is Symphony Samuels.  Symphony comes to the team from a strong high school program at Rush-Henrietta.  She has tremendous jumping ability and great passion for the game.  She will play the left side and middle positions this year.  Melinda (Mindy) Prievo comes to the team as a transfer from Keuka College where she saw significant court time.  She is a strong all-around athlete and comes to the team with a very strong work ethic.  Mindy can play almost any position on the court and will be used as a utility player.

Also playing on the outside is Tamara Robertson.  She also comes to MCC from Victor High School, where her team won a state title, and the Extreme volleyball club.   Tamara is a strong all-around player and will be one of the strongest passers in the conference.  As Tamara continues to gain strength and confidence she will make large contributions to the team.  Kelsey Brown joins the team from Lyndonville High School.  She worked very hard in the preseason and was able to quickly adjust when she was asked to play in the middle, a different position then she previously played.  Kelsey continues to adjust to the speed of the college game and gets better every day.

Lisa Stefanik comes to the team with a strong high school and club volleyball background as well.  She was a teammate of Katie Lasch’s at Greece Arcadia High School and also played for Volley FX volleyball club.  Lisa is an extremely strong technical player.  She is a solid setter and defensive player.  Lisa’s agility and speed will help her to make strong contributions to the team, including sharing setting responsibilities.  Sarah Zelko also comes to the team from Horseheads High School and the Southern tier volleyball club.  She possesses excellent setting skills and has a high volleyball IQ.  She gladly takes on the task of leading this year’s offense.

Starting at the libero position is Jordan Bandera.  She comes to MCC from Solvay High School.  Jordan is quick and has an excellent read for the game.  Her strong passing skills combined with her determined defense have allowed her to earn the libero position.  Rachel Gnage comes to Monroe from Williamson High School and VolleyFX volleyball club.  She has a strong volleyball background, her mother was her high school and club coach, and she is a hard worker.  Rachel’s combination of quickness and knowledge for the game will allow her to make significant contributions to many positions on the court.  Rebecca (Becca) Myers comes to MCC from Cato-Meridian High School.  She works extremely hard and is willing to contribute to the team in any way she can.  As Becca adjusts to the skill level and speed of the college game she will contribute to the team in many positions.
