Graduation and Transfer

SUNY General Education Requirements

Effective Fall 2000, new General Education degree requirements were implemented for all baccalaureate degree students at SUNY colleges and universities. Community college students planning to transfer to a SUNY campus are also responsible for meeting these requirements, particularly students enrolled in the A.A. and A.S. degree programs.

The General Education guidelines that SUNY has mandated include ten Knowledge and Skill areas and two Competencies:

The Knowledge and Skill Areas are:

  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Science
  • American History
  • Western Civilization
  • Other World Civilizations
  • Humanities
  • The Arts
  • Foreign Language
  • Basic Communication

The Competencies are:

  • Critical Thinking
  • Information Management

Each student will be required to complete coursework equally in each of the Knowledge and Skill areas and to acquire the competencies infused within the approved General Education courses that are taken.Community college students are required to complete courses in a minimum of seven of the Knowledge and Skill areas for any A.S. or A.A degree program. However, it is to the advantage of the student to complete all ten before transfer. If a student has made the decision to transfer to an SUNY institution it is very important to seek advisement on the best selection of courses in your degree program. This should be done at the earliest opportunity and continue throughout the students studies at the college.

Use the MCC SUNY General Education Course Plan to monitor your progress towards completing these requirements.

The MCC SUNY General Education Course Plan is offered in the Adobe® Acrobat® (.pdf) format. In order to view and print this form, you must have the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader installed on your computer. The reader is free and can be downloaded from the Adobe® Web site.
