Number of credit hours you have completed toward your degree:
0 - 15 credit hours:
Self-Assessment and Career Planning Activities
- Schedule an appointment with a career counselor to assist you through the career planning process.
- Discover your interests, skills, and values with Discover.
- Seek out employment which can provide valuable experience related to your career interests.
- Enroll in a CDL 100 (or CDL 101, for adult returning students only) class. These credit-bearing seminars emphasize strategies for career and life planning. CDL courses may be applied toward the general requirements of most MCC degree programs.
- Become an active participant in extracurricular and community service programs to develop your leadership skills.
- Begin investigating 4-year colleges and universities to help decide if transfer is an option.
- Attend one of the College Transfer Fairs held every Fall.
- Plan course selection in preparation for transfer and/or employment.
16 - 30 hours:
Career Exploration and Investigation Activities
- Use the career planning and occupational resources in the Career Resource Center, such as Discover, to get more ideas about possible majors or careers.
- Attend career and job fairs to explore opportunities related to your field of interest.
- Meet with 4-year college representatives who visit campus.
- Find out how co-op, internship, or community service experience can help you confirm your choice of major or career and enhance your resume. Contact the Office of Cooperative and Experiential Learning, 292-3220.
- Identify faculty members with expertise related to your interests and talk with them to learn more about career opportunities and degree requirements.
- Arrange informational interviews with people in your area of interest as a way to learn more about careers while networking with professionals in the field.
- Continue to plan course selection in preparation for transfer and/or employment.
- Continue working with a career counselor.
31 - 45 credit hours:
Career-Related Experience and Transfer Activities
- Still undecided about your career and/or major? Discuss options with a career counselor.
- Get more transfer information through college catalogs and videotapes, the CollegeView program, and the College Transfer Guide and Checklist. Meet with a transfer counselor to discuss your plans or for assistance in completing college and scholarship applications.
- Meet with 4-year college representatives who visit campus.
- Attend resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and job search workshops. Bring in a draft of your resume for review.
- Develop networking skills by meeting with area employers at job and career fairs.
- Finalize course selection in preparation for transfer and/or employment.
46 + credit hours:
Job Search and Transfer Activities
- Still unsure about what you want to do after graduation? Visit the Counseling Center immediately and take advantage of everything we have to offer!
- It’s still not too late to gain relevant experience through internships, co-ops, community service, and extracurricular activities.
- Jump-start your job search by connecting with employers through on-campus interviews, employer information sessions/tables, job fairs, resume referral, and the computerized job bank.
- Polish your resume, practice your interviewing techniques, and develop a job search campaign by participating in career workshops and employment panels.
- Sharpen your interviewing skills with a mock interview.
- Meet with a counselor to plan your next steps.
