Advisement and Registration

Wait Lists

Electronic wait lists are activated when a course’s maximum enrollment has been reached, and the course is closed. At this point, future registration in the class is processed through the wait list. The student’s registration will clearly show the word ‘Wait Listed’ on the right side of the student’s schedule.

As long as there are students on the wait list, the course remains closed regardless of the actual number of students enrolled. The wait listed course will open again only when the course has fewer students enrolled than the maximum allowed and there are no students on the wait list.

Students will be automatically removed from the wait list and enrolled in the course, as seats become available. This automatic transaction will occur in a batch process after business hours each weekday. Students will be sent an updated copy of their schedule to alert them to the schedule change.

Students may wait list for numerous sections of the same course. However, once they are placed in a section they will eventually be dropped from the wait lists of the alternate sections. The system does not know what the student’s preference is.This allows the student to maximize their chance of obtaining a seat in a high demand course.

Students should be aware that common scheduling errors cannot be resolved when wait listing a course. Some examples are:

  • Don’t register and wait list for different sections of the same course.

  • Don’t register and wait list for courses that have a time conflict.

  • Don’t wait list for a course if it will exceed the number of credits you are permitted to take in a specific semester.

The system cannot solve these errors. The student will be dropped from the wait list and notified of the action

Most wait lists will be deleted at the close of business on the Thursday before classes begin. The Registration & Records Office sends a letter to all students informing them of the date the wait lists will be deleted and reminds them that it is their responsibility to drop from the wait list if they are no longer interested. It also reminds students that they are responsible for the tuition if they are moved from the wait list to the roster right before classes begin.
