For additional information, pick up a copy of our brochure, "Career Planning for You at the Counseling Center," when you visit the Counseling & Advising Center.

You may also wish to enroll in a career development course, CDL 100, CDL 101 or CDL 110, to learn more about yourself, the world of work, and the career planning process. These credit-bearing seminars emphasize strategies for career and life planning. CDL courses may be applied toward the general elective requirements of most MCC degree programs. Class sections are available at both the Brighton and Damon campuses. In addition, one section of CDL 101 and CDL 100 (Career and Life Planning for Returning Adults), are being offered ON-LINE over the SUNY Learning Network. To see if an on-line course is right for you please Link to the 10 Myths about On-line Education video.

You can also find a great deal of helpful career planning information on the Career Center web page.

DISCOVER

Discover is a comprehensive computer program that will help you with career planning. Whether you want immediate up-to-date information or help with creating a complete career plan, DISCOVER will meet your needs. Since you will probably use DISCOVER several times, be sure to sign on each time you use the program. The record of your use of DISCOVER will then be saved in your own unique Career Plan, which you can view on the screen and/or print at any time. You also have the option to bring a floppy disk to save your Career Plan for your personal use. Counselors are available to review and discuss your Career Plan.

DISCOVER is user friendly, the Help Desk icon provides slide shows explaining the control Panel, the World-of-Work Map, and each of the four Halls in Discover.

Hall 1: Learn about Self and Career: The system includes self-assessment inventories to help you identify your interests, values and abilities. The second part of this hall offers videos to help you learn about life roles that make up your "career".

Hall 2: Choose Occupations: This section helps you identify and learn about potential occupations and provides an introduction to the World-of-Work Map. There is a library of valuable information about occupations you can research to consider possibilities in depth.

Hall 3: Plan My Education: Hall 3 will help you choose a major area of study related to your occupation choice(s), find a school or institution that offers that major, and search for scholarships and financial aid that may be available.

Hall 4: Plan for Work: This hall will help you prepare for the job market. The sections about apprenticeships, internships, and military service provide information about ways to combine learning and paid employment. Internet hyperlinks provide immediate access to job banks, resume sites and other related job-seeking websites.

This multimedia system is available for student use in the Academic Advisement Center during normal Counseling & Advising Center hours.

We have created a Career Checklist to guide you as you answer questions and prepare to make decisions about your future.
