Manufacturing Technology

Each year more robotics and automated assembly equipment replace manual labor. This equipment must be selected, installed and maintained. Manufacturing Technology has grown in importance as more companies switch to the newer technology.

A manufacturing technician usually works with a manufacturing engineer assisting with selection, installation and operation of the latest plant floor equipment. They must possess mechanical as well as electrical/electronic knowledge. A manufacturing technician should be someone who enjoys working with machinery and computers. Although theory must be understood, the work is primarily hands-on with computers, numerically controlled machine tools, programmable logic controllers, sensors and other automation equipment.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Automation/Robotics program exposes the student to the vast field of manufacturing, The program covers areas such as manufacturing processes, robotics, and design of equipment and factories. Using the computer to plan, develop and implement ideas is a major focus of the program. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) concepts are presented and practiced in hands-on laboratory courses. Students can be placed directly in positions as technicians in manufacturing process, plant and facilities engineering departments.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

MCC's Manufacturing Technology program will prepare you for entry-level jobs that involve selection, installation and operation of today's manufacturing equipment. This equipment includes robots, conveyor lines, computers, numerically controlled machine tools, sensors and programmable logic controllers.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The main reason productivity of the American worked has improved is due to the increase in automation and robotics. Technicians are required to install and maintain this new equipment. All manufacturing companies who are upgrading their manufacturing methods to compete in world markets have a need for these technicians. In additions, positions in supervision and technical sales are possible. It is anticipated that salaries will be similar to other related technologies with a median salary around $35,000.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Elementary algebra (Course I), geometry (Course II), and intermediate algebra (Course III) are required for admission to the program Other high school courses that we recommend are statistics, physics, mechanical drawing and one-half year machine shop.

TRANSFER OPPORTUNITIES

Although the program is designed for immediate employment after graduation, you may transfer to Rochester Institute of Technology's Bachelor of Technology in the Manufacturing Engineering Degree program.
