(Rochester, NY) -- Two labs used by the Electrical Technology program and other technical departments, will undergo a facelift this summer thanks to funding recently received from a Perkins III grant for career programs.

The $208,000 grant was awarded to the department this spring and will be used to renovate both of the labs with new equipment, furnishings, PCs and teaching aids.

“Our technical education students now can receive the the benefit of a true state-of-the-art facility” said William Yanklowski Chair of the department.

Room 09-115 Electronics Lab: One of the two labs being earmarked for a complete upgrade during the summer of 2007. The lab will become a "smart classroom" with full multimedia capabilities that can be used for both lecture and lab.

“This upgrade will allow our students to get their hands on some of the latest test equipment and simulation software available for teaching Electronics theory and measurement skills”, said Terry Trudeau, ET Department Technician. The new hardware and software in the lab will be based on the technology currently being used in local and national industry.

Simulation software such as National Instruments LabVIEW© and NI MultiSim© (formerly Electronics Workbench), will become a large part of the curriculum over the next few years. Digital based Tektronix Oscilloscopes, virtual instruments and other digital and analog test equipment to be added to the room, will help assure graduates are prepared for a high-tech career in Electronics.

Room 09-133 Electronics Lab: The second of two labs selected for a complete upgrade during the summer. This lab will also become a "smart classroom" with full multimedia capabilities and will be modified to accommodate both labs and lectures.

Perkins III grants are awarded to career programs that teach technical content to a diverse population. The grants mandate that funds be used to meet several criteria including:

  • Strengthen the academic, vocational, and technical skills of students

  • Provide students with strong experience and an understanding of all aspects of an industry

  • Develop, improve or expand the use of technology in vocational and technical education

  • Initiate, improve, expand and modernize quality vocational and technical education programs

In addition to Electrical Technology, MCC's Engineering Technologies Dept. part of the Technical Education Division offers degree programs in Mechanical Technology, Optical Technology and Construction Technology. For more information about any of the department's programs please contact us here.
