Testing
for students interested in the ESOL Program consists of a multiple-choice,
computer-based test that requires recognition of an appropriate grammatical
form and/or specific vocabulary item. The purpose is to evaluate knowledge
of everyday English. This is a timed test of 45 minutes. In addition,
students may be asked to write at least one page on a given topic and
have an informal interview with an ESOL faculty member.
The best preparation for the ESOL placement test is using English every
day to challenge oneself in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Study of vocabulary and grammar in context may also be helpful. Useful
materials include books, newspapers, magazines, films, TV, and internet
resources (click on “Useful Links” to the left).
Testing is done on a walk-in basis in the Placement Testing labs at the
Brighton Campus (Building 3, Room 107) or Damon City Campus (5th floor,
Student Services Office). You do not need an appointment. A photo ID is
required (driver’s license, passport, green card, etc).
For a recorded message with current
ESOL testing dates and times, call 292-2290 for the Brighton Campus or
for the Damon City Campus call 262-1619; or go to ESOL Placement Testing for additional information.
ESOL students who need to take the math test will take the mathematics
portion of the Accuplacer. This
may be done after taking the ESOL placement test.
