REPEATED COURSES & YOUR FINANCIAL AID
Many students do not realize that repeating courses can have an adverse effect on their financial aid eligibility. This primarily occurs in regards to New York State Financial Aid programs, such as TAP. If a student retakes a course in which they have received a passing grade (D- or higher), the course cannot be counted as part of the student's course load which determines the students eligibility for state financial aid programs. However, as in most instances, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

  1. A passing grade is received for a course, but a higher grade is necessary to meet the degree requirements. i.e. A student receives a grade of "D" in FIN 200, however the program requires that the student has a grade of "C" or higher in order to graduate from that program.
  2. A passing grade is received for a course, but a higher grade is necessary to take the next course in the sequence. i.e. A student receives a grade of "D" in FIN 201, however the program requires that the student has a grade of "C" or higher in order to take FIN 202.
  3. A student must take and pass two associated courses concurrently and a passing grade is received in only one of the courses. i.e. Course FIN 200 requires that concurrently take FIN 201 and the student receives a "B" in FIN 200 and an "F" in FIN 201.
  4. When a course may be repeated and credit earned toward the degree each time it is taken, such as physical education courses.

Student's who have questions regarding repeating coursework and maintaining their financial aid eligibility, should review pages 26-27 of the MCC 2003-2004 College Catalog and Student Handbook or contact the MCC Financial Aid Office.

2004-2005 MCC SCHOLARSHIPS
The following student scholarship applications are now available at the Financial Aid Office:

  1. MCC Scholarship Brochure 2004-2005: Includes a description and an application for scholarships that are funded through the MCC Foundation. They are available for new and continuing MCC students for next school year. Deadlines and criteria vary for each individual scholarship.
  2. Thompson Family Scholarship for 2004-2005: Available for continuing full time students. Eligible applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, financial need, and a unique challenge to attend MCC. Deadline for completion and return of this scholarship application is May7, 2004.

Students can download the application from the MCC Financial Aid web page (www.monroecc.edu/depts/finaid) or request the applications from Financial Aid Office on the Brighton Campus or the Student Services Center at the Damon City Campus.

TUITION DUE DATE SET FOR FALL 2004
Please note that the tuition due date for the fall 2004 semester is July 15, 2004. Students are strongly encouraged to file early for financial aid in order to insure that their financial aid is processed by the new tuition due date.

The MCC Financial Aid Office will be offering filing workshops over the next few months to assist students with electronic filing. Check the MCC Financial Aid Web page for dates and times. www.monroecc.edu/depts/finaid

SUMMER FINANCIAL AID
Summer financial aid is available and is based on the 2004-2005 financial aid application process. The following types are available to those who meet the eligibility guidelines:

  • Federal PELL Grand - Based on need, must file 2004-2005 FAFSA. NOTE: Any PELL used in summer may reduce PELL in Spring 2005 if full time Fall 2004.
  • Federal Direct Student Loans - Must be enrolled in at least six credit hours. Students must file 2004-2005 FAFSA and submit request for Summer 2004 Student Load.
  • New York State TAP - Based on need, student must be in at least six credit hours and full time either Spring 2004 or Fall 2004. Students must file 2004-2005 FAFSA and 2004-2005 Express TAP Application. NOTE Due to New York State budgetary procedures, TAP would not be available to pay for summer charges prior to the semester. In fact, students who intend to use TAP should make other payment arrangements, and are usually reimbursed approximately one year later when New York State makes summer TAP funds available to schools from the previous year. Also, utilizing TAP for summer school may be a disadvantage to students planning to pursue a bachelor's degree due to the limited number of TAP awards a student can receive.
  • Federal Work Study - Based on need, students must file FAFSA for 2004-2005 and employment would begin July 1, 2004. Priority would be given to full time students.

Any student applying for student aid for summer must:

  • Be Matriculated in a Degree Program.
  • Be in Good Academic Standing at the end of the Spring 2004 semester.

Students can apply for a deferment of summer tuition if they have filed 2004-2005 FAFSA and a 2004 Summer Financial Aid application, and can demonstrate eligibility to the Financial Aid Office.

In addition, students should be aware that there will be no summer refund checks mailed to students taking courses in Summer Session II until at least the end of the third week of July. Students who attend only Session I courses would not be issued refunds until the session has been completed. Students are expected to plan to provide their own educationally related living expenses until refunds are issued.

LOAN EXIT COUNSELING Prior to graduating or leaving college, borrowers are required to complete an exit counseling session. The purpose of the exit counseling session is to help students understand their rights and responsibilities as a Direct Load borrower. Loan Exit Counseling sessions are conducted on-line. Student can link to the Direct Loan exit counseling site from the MCC Financial Aid web page at www.monroecc.edu/depts/finaid.
This online exit counseling session will take about 30-40 minutes to complete.

2004-2005 FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION REMINDERS Here are few reminders for students and parents for applying for Financial Aid for the 2004-2005 academic year:

  • File early, as soon as the students and/or parent's federal tax returns are completed.
  • Get a PIN. Both students and parents should have a financial aid PIN, which will allow them to sign the On-line FAFSA electronically and to make corrections to the FAFSA on-line. For more info go to www.pin.ed.gov.
  • File On-line. Students can apply for both Federal and NYS Financial Aid programs via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. On-line is faster and more efficient.
  • Keep copies of all of your 2003 income documents. (Federal & State tax returns, W-2's, Social Security, Unemployment, or Welfare benefits statements)
