Financial Aid for Summer Terms
Financial aid is available for students who attend MCC
during the Summer sessions and meet the general eligibility requirements.

In addition, in order to receive summer financial aid, students must:
- Be Matriculated in a Degree Program. Please contact the
Admissions Office if you have not completed an Admissions Application.
- Be certified as having attended class by instructors on the Class Attendance Rosters.
- Meet satisfactory academic progress standards at the end of the previous spring semester as
required for Federal and State Financial Aid eligibility. Please refer to the Monroe Community College catalog.
- Have complied with the Financial Aid Office’s request for documentation.
- Have fulfilled the loan counseling requirements (if paying with a student loan) and signed promissory note if required.
Available Aid Programs:
The following types of financial aid for summer are available to those who meet the eligibility guidelines:
- Federal PELL Grant - Awards are based on need as determined by filing the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Awards range from $200 to $2366 for the Summer term. Students must be registered for at least
3 credit hours. NOTE: Any PELL awards received for the Summer term may reduce the amount of the PELL award for the
following Spring semester.
- Federal Direct Student Loans - Students must be registered for at least six credit hours to receive
a Federal Direct Student Loan. Any loan money borrowed for the summer term counts against annual aggregate loan limit
for the remainder of the academic year.
- Federal Work Study - Awards are based on need and cost of attendance. Employment begins after July 1.
- New York State TAP - Awards are based on need as determined by the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation.
Students must be registered for at least six credit hours for the Summer term and full time either the preceding Spring semester or the
following Fall semester. NOTE: Due to New York State budgetary procedures, TAP is not available to pay for summer charges
prior to the semester so students who intend to use TAP need to make other payment arrangements, and are usually reimbursed
approximately 18 months later when New York State makes summer TAP funds available to schools from the previous year. TAP is
not recommended for use for summer enrollment due to limited eligibility.

How To Apply:
To apply for all federal and state aid programs, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Students interested in the Federal Direct Student Loan program and the Federal Work Study program will need to complete additional
applications which can be found on the Forms page of this web site. In addition, NYS requires a separate
application to be filed for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). This can be done online after the student has filed their FAFSA,
at www.tapweb.org.
For financial aid purposes, the summer term begins the new academic year and it is important for students
to file the correct FAFSA for the appropriate academic year. For example, students who plan to enroll in courses for the 2008
summer term, must file the 2008-09 FAFSA. Students who plan to enroll in classes for 2009 summer term, must file the 2009-10 FAFSA.
Please be aware that the financial aid application process can be lengthy and additional information may
be required from students and parents. Applicants are encouraged to file as soon as possible after January 1st. The quickest way
to file your FAFSA is via “FAFSA on the Web” at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Guidelines for the application
process can be found in the “Applying” section of this web site.
Deferments, Bookstore Credit & Disbursement of Aid:
Students can apply for a deferment of summer tuition after April 15 if they have filed a FAFSA and can
demonstrate eligibility (with confirmation page or Student Aid Report) to the Financial Aid Office.
Book Store Credit will be available to eligible students approximately one week before classes begin and
based on approved financial aid in excess of tuition and fees. Notification will be sent in the mail to students.
Disbursement of federal financial aid funds will not occur until after July 1st. Students are expected to
plan to provide their own educationally related living expenses until those funds can be disbursed.
