Tuition Assistance Program


The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a grant program financed by New York State that provides assistance for eligible full-time and part-time students enrolled in approved undergraduate studies. Awards at Monroe Community College range from $250 to $2700 per year. A TAP award cannot exceed tuition charges for any enrollment term.


Tuition Assistance Program Full-Time Awards

To be eligible for a Full-Time TAP award, a student must:

  • Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be a resident of New York.
  • Study full time (at least 12 credits per semester) at and approved postsecondary institution in New York.
  • Have graduated from high school, or has a GED, or passed a federally-approved exam demonstrating that the student can benefit from the education offered.
  • Be matriculated in an approved program of study and be in good academic standing.
  • Have at least a cumulative "C" average after receipt of two annual payments.
  • Not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC and not be in default on any repayment of State awards.
  • Meet income requirement.

Tuition Assistance Program Part-Time Awards

To be eligible for a Part-Time TAP award, a student must:

  • Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be a resident of New York.
  • Be a first-time freshman in the 2006-07 academic year or thereafter.
  • Have graduated from high school, or has a GED, or passed a federally-approved exam demonstrating that the student can benefit from the education offered.
  • Have earned 12 credit hours or more in each of the two consecutive preceding semesters, for a minimum total of 24 credits earned.
  • Be matriculated in an approved program of study and be in good academic standing.
  • Not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC and not be in default on any repayment of State awards.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of at least 2.0 or higher.
  • Be enrolled in 6-11 credit hours per semester.
  • Meet income requirement.

New York State Application for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Students and families will initiate the TAP application process by completing and filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • Students who file the online FAFSA, FAFSA On The Web, can access the online TAP application using the link at the end of the online FAFSA.

  • Students who do not file their FAFSA using FAFSA On The Web or do not file their TAP application at the time they complete their FAFSA online, can file their TAP application using TAP On The Web application, after their FAFSA has been processed.

  • Once the TAP application is processed, HESC will issue award certificates or additional follow-up requests.
