Course Description:

Professor Stasia Callan leads this unique trip to study Celtic myths and
legends. Lectures, readings, discussions and dialogue journal
writing are part of this study abroad. The trip also includes visits to
museums in London, Dublin, and other places to study artifacts that reflect
Celtic beliefs and values. Additionally, the study will include
tours of famous mythical sites such as Stonehenge and other megalithic
monuments; also mythically important places linked to King Arthur and
the Holy Grail stories: castles, hillforts, Celtic sanctuaries,centers
of royal power and important monastic sites throughout England and Ireland.
Course Objectives:
To acquaint students with the mythic heritage of the Celts
who were at the root of shaping Western civilization. Through readings
of their myths and legends, students will be able to see how the mythic
beliefs shaped the Celtic culture and how they affect contemporary culture.
Additionally, the course will provide international experience in many
areas of life.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Before the trip:
Reading of the three required texts and journal writing.
During the trip:
Journal writing on-location, reviewed at random during the trip
as we visit Celtic sites, hearing brief talks, and discussing what we
saw and heard.
After the trip:
One formal paper (4 – 6 typed pages double-spaced) based on readings
and observations during the trip due two weeks after the trip or sooner.
Reading report on at least one book from the list of Recommended Readings
(2 – 3 typed pages double-spaced)
Course Assessment essay (2-3 typed pages double-spaced)

Three credit hours of English 106.
