Homeric Epics On-Location in Greece

Professor Stasia Callan will lead this unique study of The Iliad and The Oddysey through readings, journal responses, discussions, and visits to Athens, Olympia, Delphi, Pilos, Mykonos, and other sites mentioned in the Homeric Epics. The tour will include art galleries, libraries, museums, and theaters. There will be on-site lectures, discussions, and journal writing recording experiential learning.

Course Objectives:

Students will do the following: 1) Study the great epics of Western Literature; 2) visit the Greek places where these stories originated; 3) experience the wonders of Greek art, architecture, and landscape; 4) experience the modern manifestation of ancient Greek culture; 5) continue developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills; 6) gain an international experience that will enrich their lives.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Before the trip:
Attend the class introductory meetings/discussions before the trip. Read The Iliad. Respond to each of the twenty-four papyrus scrolls, (i.e. books, in your journal, interpreting its key points). Journals will be collected and there will be a meeting to discuss the reading. The Odyssey will be read and responded to in the same manner with a follow meeting for discussion of The Odyssey.
During the trip:
Write journal entries on-location as we travel from one site to another. Observe and listen to the guides. We will discuss our experiential learning on-location. Journals will be reviewed by the professor during this trip.
After the trip:

One formal paper (6-7 typed double spaced pages, documented in MLA style) based on research and observation due two weeks after the trip. There will be a meeting after the papers have been read by the professor to share what has been learned through research.

One reading report on a book from Recommended readings, or a critique of at least two Homeric web sites, about 3 – 4 pages each.

Travel Course Assessment Essay, about 2 –3 pages long.

Three credit hours of English 106.
