Volunteers Make Alumni Week and Homecoming a Success

The MCC Foundation thanks the members of the Alumni Week and Homecoming 2014 Planning Committee for their outstanding effort to reconnect alumni, students and friends to MCC.  Together, with our college community partners, we held 16 very successful events!

Our Homecoming celebration began with the Golf Classic and Luncheon honoring Betty P. Smith ’82 held at Eagle Vale Golf Club raising $4,200 in support of the Betty P. Smith Scholarship for Returning Adult Students.

Community and college officials participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the new “College Green.”  Also in attendance were MCC students, faculty, staff and donors.

Then, the Homecoming carnival and headline performance  featuring Michael DuBois the solo circus performer offered a day filled with fun, rides, a food truck rodeo, mechanical bull and music.  The western-themed carnival and headline performance were hosted by the Campus Activities Board.

Spirit Day followed with the annual Faculty vs. Students Basketball Game hosted by Athletics and with music provided by WMCC The Pulse.  Faculty, staff and students wearing black and gold cheered on their favorite team from the sidelines.

Alexander Street Campus 50th Reunion Weekend brought together alumni from the college's founding classes at a variety of events including a history lecture, a "pub classics" cooking class at the NY Wine and Culinary Center, a gala dinner and send-off picnic at Powder Mills Park.

Homecoming Day was filled with family friendly events, starting with the 8th Annual 5K Walk/Run.  Over 400 MCC faculty, staff, alumni and community members participated and raised over $15,000 for student scholarships!  Special thanks to Donna Burke, Pat Joram '12, Katie Cahill, Kristen Love, Jodi Oriel '93, Courtney Sprague '02, Dawn Quatro '91, John Wadach and Kimberly Willis '92 for forming teams, encouraging sponsorship and lending their leadership support to make this our most successful race yet!

Scholarships totaling $4,000 were awarded to:  Sarah LeGrett, Padma Khanal, Joe Reinhardt, Sarah Lanzafame and Lorvie Josaphat.  Congratulations to our 5K top finishers:  Kevin Sheehan, Anne Rampolla, Mike Quinn, Sam Lindblom, Dale Pearce, Meg LeBeau, Linda Didsbury, Jeff Bartkovich and Roxanne Limo.  Award winners were:  Gwen Zannie, Kim Willis, the Student Services/Miles for Mary Team, Filimon Hagos, Betty Smith, Latrel Walker, Bethany Ruggero and the Engineering Leadership Council.

Special thanks to all our team members for their enthusiasm and generosity.  Our two top fundraising teams:  Student Services Hoofers/Miles for Mary raised $4,000 and the Lap for Linda team dressed in tutu’s raised $3,870!  They were followed by Academic Services, TheTechies and The Trekies, Administrative Services, Applied Technologies, EDIWIS/Despicable We, Engineering Leadership Council, Foundation Frolickers, GG 2 Shoes, Here Comes Treble!, Housing and Residence Life, Outdoor Unlimited,

the MCC swimming and diving and women’s basketball teams, Teaching and Creativity Center, The CIS Flash and Team Moose.

Thank you to all the individual and team participants, MCC staff and the many volunteers, including students from Nursing, VAPA and the Honors Institute, who helped make this event a success.

The 5K Walk/Run was followed by MCC Tribunes games and Tailgate Party sponsored by Sodexo, the MCC Association and GEICO.

Alumni Week and Homecoming wound down with an Alumni Art Exhibit Open House featuring MCC’s own Alumni Hall of Fame member Peter Monacelli ’73.  Peter was on hand  to guide guests through an exhibit featuring the complete show of his tribute to the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination.

The Damon Campus Student Events and Governance Association hosted a celebration, for Damon City Campus students and staff with cake, ice cream and music during college hour.

Our celebration came to a close as alumni took advantage of an exceptional opportunity to learn cooking and wine pairing techniques from Professor and Chair, Michelle Bartell, Chef Gerry Brinkman and Professor Dave Boni.  Special thanks to Kim Joyce and the Hospitality Department students who helped with everything from prep through plating to make the evening a success.
