Wolk Faces of the FutureROCHESTER, N.Y. – Monroe Community College student nurses will now have a new scholarship fund to support their success. A $375,000 gift from the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation to the Monroe Community College Foundation has established the Wolk Faces of the Future Scholarship to help MCC students earn their associate in applied science degrees and become registered nurses.

Wolk Foundation trustees joined college and foundation leaders today to announce the scholarship program and introduce the first 20 recipients—student nurses who hail from Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties. The scholarship is open to full- or part-time students enrolled in MCC’s nursing program who demonstrate potential for a successful career as a registered nurse.

“MCC’s nursing graduates are well prepared to enter the workforce directly after graduation,” said Wolk Foundation Chairman David Myron Wolk. “The graduates’ high achievement rates attracted our attention years ago and this scholarship offers another way to strengthen health care education in our community. We know our first 20 scholars will go on to achieve rewarding careers after MCC and serve our community well.”

MCC’s is one of the largest educators of registered nurses for Western New York, graduating approximately 130 students per year. Year after year, 96 to 99 percent of MCC nursing program graduates pass the national licensing exam the first time they take it. Students attend classes at the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Center for Excellence at MCC—a facility made possible by a $2 million gift from the Wolk Foundation to the MCC Foundation in 2007. The majority of MCC graduates work locally as registered nurses.

“In 2008, the Wolk Foundation helped us open the doors to one of the most outstanding teaching and learning facilities in our region, the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Center for Excellence in Nursing,” said MCC Foundation Executive Director Diane L. Shoger. “This scholarship fund announced today further enhances the learning experience MCC offers by helping our graduates create personal paths to earn degrees at MCC and beyond that will benefit them professionally. We thank the Wolk Foundation Trustees for considering MCC’s nursing program as worthy of continued investment.”

“MCC’s nursing program is very demanding, with most students finding it necessary to reduce their work hours in order to be successful,” said Sue Carlson, interim chairperson, MCC Department of Nursing. “In addition to helping cover the costs of uniforms, electronic text book packages and licensure review courses, the Wolk Faces of the Future Scholarship will help our students financially plan for offsetting the cost of going on to obtain their bachelor of science in nursing degrees.”
