Graduation Procedures

Students who wish to graduate must complete an Intent to Graduate Application after registering for their last semester at MCC.

If an Intent to Graduate Application is not completed, the student will not be audited or processed for graduation.

You can file your application online or you may obtain an application at the Registration and Records Office, the Advisement Center on the Brighton Campus or at the Student Engagement Center at the Downtown Campus.

The Intent to Graduate Application asks for the following information:

  • Name (As you would like it to appear on your diploma)
  • Mailing Address
  • Student ID (Your Banner ID "M" number)
  • Telephone Number
  • Program for which you are requesting a degree
  • Transfer Credit you are requesting from another institution that you previously attended
  • Expected Date of Graduation

Once a student submits an Intent to Graduate Application, an initial audit is done to determine if he/she is in fact in the process of completing the necessary courses for the degree. The student is then notified in writing by Registration and Records as to his/her prior eligibility. If the student is eligible, a letter of prior eligibility is emailed to the student's MCC email. If the student is not eligible, a letter is sent indicating the remaining requirements and that the student may reapply at a later date.

Although there are three graduation dates (May 30, August 30 and December 30), there is only one Commencement Ceremony.  All graduates and eligible candidates from August of the previous year to May of the present year may participate in the spring Commencement Ceremony.

In April, Student Services emails commencement information and instructions to graduates and candidates for graduation. Information includes the location, date and time of the ceremony, as well as where to pick up caps and gowns and where to assemble prior to the ceremony. At the present time, tickets are not required to attend the commencement ceremony. Graduates may invite as many family members and friends as they wish. Commencement information may also be obtained online at Ceremony Details.

Note: There is no additional charge involved with graduation or commencement.
