Academic Standards Policy

Definition of: Credits, Quality Points, Attempted Hours, Passed Hours, Earned Hours, GPA Hours, Semester Average (Current Term), Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and Academic Standing.

CREDITS: Are referred to as the total number of credit hours for a course

QUALITY POINTS: The figure obtained by multiplying the credit hours of a course by numerical value of the grade assigned.

The numerical value of grades are:
A = 4.0 A- = 3.7	B+ = 3.3 B = 3.0 B- = 2.7	C+ = 2.3 C = 2.0 C- = 1.7	D+ = 1.3 D = 1.0 D- = 0.7	F = 0.0
*NOTE: Grades of I, AU, W, and R have neither credit nor quality points assigned.

ATTEMPTED HOURS: Includes all credit and non-credit bearing courses with grades of 'A' - 'F', 'W' and 'I'. It also includes Transfer Credits and Excluded courses.

PASSED HOURS: Includes all credit and non-credit bearing courses with grades of 'A' - 'F'. It also includes Transfer Credits.

EARNED HOURS: Includes all credit bearing hours with grades of 'A' - 'F'. It also includes Transfer Credits.

GPA HOURS: Includes all MCC credit-bearing hours with grades of 'A' - 'F'.

SEMESTER AVERAGE - GPA for Current Term
Calculate only for credit courses completed during the semester with grades of
A, A-, B+,B,B-,C+,C,C-,D+,D,D- or F as follows:

1. Determine the quality points earned for each MCC credit-bearing course.
2. Total the Quality Points for all of the courses.
3. Total the Credits for all courses.
4. Divide the total Quality Points by the Credits.

NOTE: The "I" grade is not used in computation of GPA. This computation is for one* semester only.

CUMULATIVE AVERAGE: Cumulative average is based upon quality points and GPA hours earned at MCC. It is calculated by dividing the total quality points by the total GPA hours. **PLEASE NOTE: Transfer credit & Credit by Exam are not included in the computation of the cumulative GPA.

ACADEMIC STANDING: A student's academic standing is determined on the basis of cumulative GPA and total credits accumulated at MCC (including hours for "F" grades).
