History of Honors Studies at MCC

"A Program of Enchantment"

"Unless we undertake the establishment of such a program now…the present disenchantment of too many of our best students will deepen. Let us begin, therefore, the process which will lead to a responsible program, a program of Enchantment"
-Lee Adnepos, "An Honors Program at MCC!?", 1974

The Honors Studies program at MCC was created through the efforts of many dedicated individuals. Beginning with the admonitions of Professor Lee Adnepos in 1974 (cited above), many faculty, staff, and administrators have worked selflessly to create and guide MCC’s Honors Studies Program through various stages of evolution.

Between 1974 and 1987, Professor Adnepos led an effort to envision and build a full Honors Studies program, that had grown by 1989 to include eleven dedicated sections of honors courses, serving nearly 200 total students. In 2006, the number of honors-eligible MCC students who take advantage of honors courses in any given semester is between 200-300, with nearly 100 students seeking an Honors Concentration Degree. In addition, Honors Studies at MCC now offers over 20 different courses on a rotating schedule.

Beginning in the Fall of 2008, Honors Studies at MCC will reopen as a dedicated “Honors Institute” seeking highly qualified students. The creation of an Honors Institute at MCC has been a collaborative effort led by representatives of divisions, offices, and departments across the college that, when fully realized, will consist of more than 100 students majoring in a variety of disciplines. Over the course of the next three years, our goal is to make MCC’s Honors Institute known to admissions departments throughout the Northeast and beyond and to help prepare our students to compete for these highly selective transfer options, while at the same time benefiting our existing honors student population.

In addition to receiving all the benefits that our current generation of Honors Studies students receive, those who enter the Honors Institute will have the opportunity to participate in challenging and memorable academic experiences as members of an academically themed community of honors students who learn together in “knowledge tracks” designed and led by faculty. Students will be able to self-select a particular area of emphasis to complement their existing degree programs and/or their own budding academic and artistic interests.
