This special requirement for students enrolled
in Human Services provides a unique learning experience and growth opportunity.
Each student is required to do fieldwork, in conjunction with a seminar,
in a community agency. The choice of the agency will match your interest
as closely as possible and is arranged by our fieldwork Coordinator.
The time requirement for fieldwork is 9 hours per week from the time
an agency is assigned to the end of the semester. Students usually arrange
their fieldwork time on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in blocks
of three or four hours. You will earn two credits for this course.
The learning experience is developed through responsibilities assigned
by fieldwork supervisors based upon learning objectives developed by
students. These objectives and responsibilities are set forth in a Fieldwork Learning Contract, which is validated by the seminar instructor.
To qualify as fieldwork these three criteria must be met:
- The student must work directly with clients.
- There must be a human services professional available to supervise
the work.
- The fieldwork must be approved by the student’s instructor.
HOURS REQUIRED
Simply put, to complete the fieldwork requirement, students must work
at their site for nine hours per week from the time they are placed until
the last day of the semester.
In addition, in order to protect the validity of the
credits we grant, minimum hour requirements are imposed in addition to
the requirements. For HUM 111, the minimum is 75 hours, thereafter, the
minimum is 115 hours.
