Introduction: What is a Database?
A database is a software tool to help you “electronically”
keep track of information. Once the data is entered into a database system,
you will be able to quickly “Access” the information you need
for reporting and analysis. That must be why Microsoft named their database
software tool Access!
Any filing cabinet or collection of information you maintain is a database
waiting to happen. Once the “paper” information is entered
into electronic format within a database, you will be able to research
and pull out the information you need more efficiently than manually going
through all the paper to find what you need!
Getting Started
The first step to implementing a database is to get training in Microsoft
Access. Track J: Microsoft Access will give you the information you need
to design and develop a database system.
Database Consulting Services
Developing a database can be a challenging endeavor, so we will
not leave you stranded after the last day of training! As a supplement
to the training you receive in Track
J: Microsoft Access, you can set up additional appointments with your
Access instructor to review your design ideas. As you work through the
process of creating a database, your instructor can act as a technical
coach and help you implement your database idea into an efficient database
system. Your instructor will give you their contact information during
class.
Database Design Services
If you feel you have a database idea, but know you do not have the time
to implement it given your job responsibilities, you can request
full-file database development through the ETS Computing Department.
Through a series of meetings, Computing programmers will collect the
information they need to create a database system for you. Your Department
Head must submit the request for database development, with justification
on how you plan to use the database and how it will help to streamline
your current operations. Your request will be scheduled and a timeline
established for completion of the project. |
