Student Questions

What if I want to join, but am not in a mentor's class?
If none of your professors are Liberal Arts Faculty Mentors, click on the "Liberal Arts Mentors" link above and view the Mentor list to see in any of your former or current instructors are Mentors.  Feel free to contact one of them to make arrangements for mentoring.

How do I join the Liberal Arts Mentor Program?
It’s simple!  During the third or fourth week of classes, Liberal Arts Faculty Mentors will have the opportunity to invite their students who are Liberal Arts majors to sign up to participate in the Liberal Arts Mentor Program.  Students who choose to participate will have that professor as their Liberal Arts Mentor until graduation from MCC (or a program change from Liberal Arts).  If none of your professors are Liberal Arts Faculty Mentors, click on the "Liberal Arts Mentors" link above and view the Mentor list to see in any of your former or current instructors are Mentors.  Feel free to contact one of them to make arrangements for mentoring.

Who are the current Liberal Arts Mentors?
The Liberal Arts Mentor List can be found by going to "Liberal Arts Mentors" link above or by contacting lamp@monroecc.edu.

Where would I meet my Mentor to discuss my course selection and schedule of classes?
Most mentoring sessions take place in the faculty member’s office primarily due to the availability of advising resources. However, the Mentors and Mentees can work together to establish the location of their advisement session.

Do I have to be part of the Liberal Arts major to be part of the Liberal Arts Mentor Program?
Yes, students should be in a Liberal Arts Program in order to be part of the Liberal Arts Mentor Program. If you are unsure of your Program you may contact the Advising Center at 292-2298 where an Advisor will be able to help you identify the program in which you are currently enrolled.

Where can I find more information about the Program?
For more information, please contact Pam Donofrio, Liberal Arts Mentor secretary, at 292-2299 or lamp@monroecc.edu.

What can the Mentor Program offer me that I cannot get from going to the Advisement Center?
Being part of Mentor Program offers many benefits. Not only are you meeting with one of your instructors, but you are meeting with the same person each semester. Faculty in the Liberal Arts Mentor Program can provide information on career and transfer opportunities, course information, as well as the MCC policies and procedures.

Mentees establish relationships with their Mentors and often attend the program's social events. Part of the spirit behind this Program is the opportunity it offers to meet with mentors outside of the classroom and to be more involved in College life than just having them assist with course schedule building.

What if I complete a Program Change into another major, can I still meet with my mentor?
If you change your Program into a Career Program, then you will be assigned to an advisor with your new Department. If you remain in a Liberal Arts Program, then you may still meet with your Liberal Arts Mentor.

Faculty Questions

What is the Liberal Arts Faculty Mentor Program?
The Liberal Arts Faculty Mentor Program is designed for faculty advisors and students who seek a long-term mentoring relationship. Faculty mentors academically advise students from their own classes and, in some cases, register them, as well. Faculty are afforded the opportunity to further interact with students from their discipline and to assist these students in long range career planning, as well as class selection from semester to semester.

How Does it Work?
Liberal Arts faculty involved in the Mentor Program inform Liberal Arts students in their classes about this advising opportunity and solicit students from their classes who would like them as Mentors. These instructors then serve as Mentors throughout the students’ education at MCC.

What are the Program's Benefits to Students?
  • Students have one academic advisor while attending MCC
  • Students have an advisor whom they already know from their courses
  • Students have someone to turn to for academic questions and a supportive mentor who can advise them and direct them to other valuable resources on campus
  • Students develop a multi-level relationship with their instructors/advisors outside the classroom

Who are the Students Served by the Liberal Arts Mentor Program?
All Liberal Arts General Studies (LA04) and Liberal Arts advisement sequences students are eligible to be part of the Mentor Program.
