How to Find Career and Educational Planning Information
line

The Career Reference section at the Libraries has reference books to help locate career information.

Reference Sources

A good source to use first is the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Other career and educational reference sources include the following subjects in the Career Reference section:

Career Information
Financial Aid/Scholarships/Internships
Two-Year Colleges and Vocational Schools
Four-Year Colleges
Study Abroad

You can also explore online career planning websites such as:

New York Career Zone http://www.nycareerzone.org
The Occupational Outlook Handbook http://bls.gov/oco

Ask the Librarian at the Information Desk for assistance in locating career planning information. You can also go to one of the Career Resource Centers (Bldg. 3, Room 108, Brighton campus, or on the fifth floor inside the Student Services Center at DCC) for individual career assistance and to use the extensive collection of college catalogs and applications, employer literature, videos, and computer-assisted planning aids.

Career Information in Books and Pamphlets to borrow from the Libraries:

Career information in books can be found by using the MCC Library Catalog.
To find books on a specific career, search on a name of the occupation and "vocational guidance" to find the career-related materials.

Other subjects that will lead you to books pertaining to careers are:

  • employment interviewing
  • resumes (employment)
  • self-employed and student aid
  • Career information pamphlets come from professional associations, the US government and magazine and newspaper articles. The materials are arranged by subject categories. The career information pamphlet file is on the main floor of the LeRoy V. Good Library.

Career Information in Magazines and Newspapers to use in the Libraries:

Articles from magazines and newspapers may be found by using an index to magazines such as the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, either in print or online. You can also use one of the online journal databases. When using the indexes or searching the databases, look under the name of the specific occupation.

To access the online journal sources, go to http://www.monroecc.edu/go/library, click "Find articles and online databases"  and choose one of the databases listed. If off-campus, click "Access from Home" and follow directions to log-in to EZproxy. Some of the databases will provide full-text versions of the articles and others will direct you to the appropriate periodical in the Libraries.

If we don't own a certain periodical, you can request a copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan. Stop by the Information Desk for assistance.

Any questions? See the Librarian at the Information Desk!
