How To Use It
The major
research newspaper at Monroe Community College’s LeRoy V.
Good Library is The New York Times, which we own from 1914 to the present.
Although the Damon City Campus Library keeps only the most recent issues
of this title, DCC students can have articles faxed from Brighton. This
service
can take from 1-3 days.
While you
will find the latest three months of this periodical on our current
newspaper shelves, older editions will be on microfilm. Some of
our online article databases provide
full-text articles from the paper.

You can locate articles on a specific topic in one of two ways:
1.) The New York Times Index – Shelved in the
reference area, this print resource will help you identify
articles by subject. It is especially useful
if you are looking for information on an event occurring before 1980.
Here's how to use it:
-
Look up your subject.
-
Choose the news summary
which meets your needs.
-
Copy down the month,
day, page, section and column for the article
(the year is on
the Index cover).
-
Go to the Microfilm
Room (located on the Main Floor of the LeRoy
V. Good Library, Brighton Campus) to
read or print from the appropriate microfilm.
2.) MCC Libraries
subscribe to several online article databases that
either
index
citations to
The New York Times or
provide full-text articles for you to
print directly from the computer.

Searching Custom Newspapers
To find
full-text articles from 1/2000 to present:
- Type your keywords in the entry box (for
example, "drug
traffic").
- Limit your search so that you can
find articles specifically from
The New York Times.

- Click <Search>
- Review the results. If the full-text article you
want is not available from the database,
copy down the month, day, page section and column
information for the article
(for example, January 30, 2004, p.A11 col 05).

- If the article is
less than 3 months old, go to the
newspaper shelves
and look at the article in print form.
- If your
article is older than 3 months,
you will need to go to the
Microfilm Room, located on the Main Floor
of the LeRoy V. Good
Library to read or print your article from the
appropriate microfilm reel. You should also check the
holdings in our
online article databases to see if the full article is available
directly from the computer.
