Drug & Alcohol Professional Associations and Organizations

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) - This site provides general information on AA support services offered to alcoholics and their families.

  • Al-Anon/Alateen - This site provides information about Al-Anon's program of recovery which is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous.

  • American Lung Association - This site provides information about lung disease, tobacco control and environmental health.

  • American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) - ASAM is the Nation's medical specialty society dedicated to educating physicians and improving the treatment of  individuals suffering from alcoholism and other addiction.

  • Cocaine Anonymous - "Cocaine Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem, and help others to recover from their addiction."

  • Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) - DPA is the leading organization in the United States promoting alternatives to the war on drugs based on science, compassion, health, and human rights.

  • National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) - A national nonprofit organization working on behalf of children of alcohol and drug dependent parents. Their mission is to advocate for all children and families affected by alcoholism and other drug dependencies.

  • National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) - "NORML is a nonprofit, public-interest lobby that represents the interests Americans who smoke marijuana responsibly and believe the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana should no longer be a crime."

  • Narcotics Anonymous - An international, community-based association which provides a recovery process and support network to those afflicted with drug addiction.

  • National Inhalant Prevention Coalition (NIPC) - "NIPC is a public-private effort to promote awareness and recognition of the under publicized problem of inhalant use."

  • Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Providers of New York State (ASAPNYS) - ASAPNYS represents the interests of the largest alcoholism and substance abuse services system in the United States. Members include programs and agencies throughout NYS which provide alcoholism and substance abuse prevention, treatment, research and training.

  • NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) - This site provides links to resources, laws and regulations, and information about OASAS prevention, treatment, and recovery programs for addiction, gambling, and chemical dependence.

  • Rochester Against Intoxicated Driving (R.A.I.D.) - "R.A.I.D. is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to speaking out and educating the community about the devastating effects of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, while at the same time creating a network of support for innocent victims whose lives have been forever changed as a result of intoxicated driving."

  • STOP DWI Program - Information about various alcohol prevention education programs offered by Monroe County, Rochester, NY.

  • Alateen - The Alanon recovery program for young people. This site provides information about the Alateen program and access to the Alateen Talk newsletter.

  • Connect with Kids - "Your resource for the latest research-based parenting tips, teacher information and news about kids. This site provides video news clips on virtually all of the critical issues effecting children today, from obesity, anorexia, and body image to cutting drug use, and bullying."

  • The Cool Spot - The young teen's place for information on alcohol and resisting peer pressure created by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.

  • The Partnership for a Drug-Free America - "A nonprofit coalition of communication, health, medical and educational professionals working to reduce illicit drug use and help people live healthy, drug-free lives."

  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) - "MADD's mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking."

  • NIDA for Teens: The Science Behind Drug Abuse - "The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Heath (NIH), created this website to educate adolescents ages 11 through 15 (as well as their parents and teachers) on the science behind drug abuse."

  • StopMedicineAbuse.org - Created by the leading manufacturers of Over-the-Counter (OTC) cough medicines and their trade association, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), StopMedicineAbuse.org provides tools and informational resources to help parents learn more about the issue of teen cough medicine abuse.

  • American Psychological Association (APA) - A scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. The "Psychology Topics" section of this site provides links to information on a wide range of topics from Addictions to Workplace Issues.

  • Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) - This site provides information on generalized anxiety, panic disorder & agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, and phobias.

  • Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) - CAMH is Canada's leading addiction and mental health teaching hospital. CAMH succeeds in transforming the lives of people affected by addiction and mental illness, by applying the latest in scientific advances, through integrated and compassionate clinical practice, health promotion, education and research.

  • Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) - DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses; depression and bipolar disorder.

  • National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) - The "Health & Outreach" section of this site discusses the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for various mental health conditions.

  • CDC'S Smoking & Tobacco Use - This page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides links to basic information on the health effects of smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, how to quit smoking, access to the Surgeon General's Reports related to tobacco, and fact sheets.

  • SAMSHA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) - The sole Federal organization responsible for improving accessibility and quality of substance abuse services through the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). "CSAP works with States and communities to develop comprehensive prevention systems that create healthy communities in which people enjoy a quality life. This includes supportive work and school environments, drug- and crime-free neighborhoods, and positive connections with friends and family."

  • The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth - Located at Georgetown University, the Center monitors the marketing practices of the alcohol industry to focus attention and action on industry practices that jeopardize the health and safety of America's youth.

  • Drugs and Young People - This page from MedlinePlus® provides links to information on commonly abused drugs, statistics on drug abuse, as well as diagnosis/symptoms, and prevention/screening resources.

  • Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) - "D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives."

  • Help Jacqui - "This site tells the story of Jacqueline Saburido who was taking a break from college and industrial engineering classes when she came to the United States from Venezuela to study English." Learn how a drunk driving crash completely changed her life.

  • Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention - "The U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center helps college campuses and communities address problems of alcohol, other drugs, and violence by identifying effective strategies and programs based upon the best prevention science." 

  • Join Together - Join Together, founded in 1992, supports community-based efforts to reduce, prevent, and treat substance abuse across the nation. In May 2009, Join Together merged into the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

  • Media Literacy for Prevention, Critical Thinking, Self-Esteem - This website from Peter DeBenedittis, Ph.D. contains research, information and educational materials about how media literacy is used for science-based prevention.

  • Parents. The Anti-Drug. - Created by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, this website serves as drug prevention information center to help equip parents and other adult caregivers with the tools needed to raise drug-free kids.

  • Tobacco-Free Kids.org - Through partnerships with more than 130 health, education, medical, civic, corporate, youth and religious organizations this non-profit organization serves a leader in the fight to reduce tobacco use and its devastating consequences in the United States and around the world.

  • Underage Drinking - This page from MedlinePlus® provides information pertaining to alcohol and its effect on youth.

  • Ergogenic Aids - Links to information on anabolic steroid abuse and athletic supplements from the Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC), U.S. Department of Agriculture,

  • MedlinePlus Drugs, Supplements, and Herbal Information - Information on prescription and over-the counter drugs is provided through two drug resources: MedMaster™, a product of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the USP DI® Advice for the Patient®, a product of the United States Pharmacopeia. Information on herbs and supplements is from Natural Standard©.

  • RxList: The Internet Drug List - This site provides information on nearly 300 drugs (equivalent to more than 4,000 US products). Each entry contains the following information: description, contraindications, warnings, cautions, drug-drug interactions, side effects, toxicity, and dosing.

  • RXMed - "Prescription information for over 3000 drug medications. Listings cover general pharmacology, indications, warnings, dosage and adverse effects."

  • Family Violence Prevention Fund - The Family Violence Prevention Fund works to prevent violence within the home, and in the community. Program links to explore on this site include: Children & Families, Health Care, Immigrant Women, Public Communications, Public Policy, Teens, and Workplace. Select the “Get Domestic Violence Facts” link to access the “IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) and Healthy People 2010 Fact Sheet," and other fact sheets.

  • CDC Violence Prevention - This page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides links to information on numerous violence prevention topics such as: child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, school violence, sexual violence, suicide, and youth violence.

  • MedlinePlus: Domestic Violence - This page from MedlinePlus.gov offers the following categories of information on domestic violence: overviews, related issues, directories, organizations, law & policy, men, teenagers, women, and seniors.

  • National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) - "The mission of NCADV is to work for major societal changes necessary to eliminate both personal and societal violence against all women and children."

  • New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence - “The mission of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence is to improve New York State’s response to and prevention of domestic violence with the goal of enhancing the safety of all New Yorkers in their intimate and family relationships.”

  • Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - An agency of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA was created to focus attention, programs, and funding on improving the lives of people with or at risk for mental and substance abuse disorders.  Use the “Search SAMHSA.gov” search box feature to locate information about domestic violence and other topics on this site.

  • The Toolkit to End Violence Against Women - Developed by the National Advisory Council on Violence Against Women, this toolkit contains sixteen chapters directed towards specific audiences that provide recommendations for strengthening violence prevention efforts and improving services and advocacy for victims.
