Types of Library Instruction
line

  • Library Orientation Tours - Provides students with a general overview of the physical layout and services of our Libraries. Tours are usually given at the start if the semester and are meant to serve as a foundation for future instruction in research methods.

  • Walk-In or Point-of-Use Instruction - A Librarian is always stationed at the Library Information Desk (Brighton Campus) or Reference Desk (Damon City Campus) to answer students' questions and to assist them in selecting and working with appropriate information sources. Point-of-use instruction can also help to reinforce information seeking skills learned through course-specific library instruction sessions.

  • Individual Research Consultations - These sessions last about half an hour and offer students a little more guidance than they would receive through point-of use instruction. A librarian can work with an individual to develop an effective search strategy that will help him or her locate quality information for a research project. Use the Individual Research Consultation Online Form to schedule a session.

  • Course-Specific Instruction - Designed to teach the skills and resources necessary for a class to complete an assignment, these sessions typically focus on teaching our online catalog and general full-text databases to find information. However, we do teach other skills (i.e. boolean search techniques, web site evaluation, literary criticism) and resources (i.e. subject specific databases such as ERIC or CINAHL, primary documents, etc.) necessary for students to become successful scholarly researchers.

  • Library Training Tracks (for Faculty and Staff) - Are your research skills up-to-date? Are you familiar with new resources? Consider signing up for one of our Library Training Tracks (after logging in choose Track "M" from the list). A librarian can work with you and/or your group to instruct on a number of research tools and skills that will greatly aid in your professional development.
