Professional Associations and Organizations

Professional Associations and organizations serve as valuable sources of information for their particular industry by providing access to current news, information about industry products, services and trends, and special research reports. They also sponsor continuing education opportunities such as annual conferences and other training events for their members. Many also publish journals dedicated specifically to their area of interest (often known as trade/industry journals).

Federal Government Resources

  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - Activities of the FAA include: safety regulation, airspace and air traffic management, promote aviation safety and encourage civil aviation abroad, test and evaluate aviation systems, devices, and materials. To access Flight Delay Information for U.S. airports visit the Air Traffic Control System Command Center.
  • International Travel Administration Office of Travel & Tourism Industries (OTTI) - The OTTI collects and publishes comprehensive international travel and tourism statistics, facilitates in the reduction of barriers to travel, represents the U.S. international travel and tourism interests to foreign governments, develops and implements comprehensive tourism policies and plans.
  • Know Before You Go - An online publication from the office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection which discusses rules for bringing items back from your trip, including information on duty, duty-free items and exemptions.
  • Transportation Security Administration (TSA) - "The TSA protects the Nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce." The "For Travelers" section of this site provides guidelines for prohibited and permitted items for carry-on luggage.
  • - This site from the U.S. State Department, Bureau of Consular Affairs provides tips for American citizens traveling or living abroad abroad, foreign citizens traveling to the U.S., and lists travel warnings.
  • Travelers' Health - This site from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) provides information on vaccination requirements, diseases, outbreaks, and country health profiles for various destinations throughout the world.

Destination & Trip Planning Information

To locate copies of print travel guidebooks available in the Library collection search the MCC Library Catalog. Many guidebook publishers have accompanying websites which provide excerpts from their print guidebooks, some of which are listed below.

  • iExplore: Adventure Travel & World Travel -  Book adventure trips, find destination information, search travel guides, photos, and reviews.
  • National Geographic: Adventure Travel - This site is the online companion to the National Geographic Adventure magazine. It features include photos, information on adventure trips, gear, and links to various blogs.

  • The Travel Channel - Features of this site include travelers' reviews, travel guides, and travel ideas.
  • Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory - "Your guide to the following official tourist information sources: government tourism offices, convention and visitors bureaus, and chambers of commerce. Businesses such as travel agents, tour operators, and hotels are not included."
  • Travel for Kids - This site provides information on "kid-friendly must sees," worldwide destinations, family-friendly restaurants, and travel essentials.

The most recent issue of The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition) is available at the Library Checkout/Reserve Desk. The most recent issues of The New York Times, and USA Today are located in the newspaper rack across from the Leisure Reading seating area on the Main Floor of the LeRoy V. Good Library (Brighton campus). To locate holdings information for older issues search the MCC Library Catalog.

  • The Sunday edition of The New York Times contains a "Travel" section. Some featured stories are also available directly online from the New York Times website.
  • The Friday edition of The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition) contains the "Weekend Journal" section which explores personal interests of business readers including real estate and travel.
  • The Weekend Edition of The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition) features the "Pursuits" section which focuses on lifestyle and leisure. Holdings information for this newspaper is available in the MCC Library Catalog.
  • The Friday edition of USA Today features a "Destinations & Diversions" section as part of its "Life" section.
